The Truggery
The Truggery in 1950
The Truggery, situated on the outskirts of Herstmonceux village, has been a trugmakers since 1899 and Sussex Trugs are still produced here using the same tools and traditional methods.
The little shop attached to the cottage contains a wide range of trugs. Also available are local crafts and a selection of garden sundries.
Visitors are welcome to visit the workshop by appointment. For those unable to shop in person, trugs are available by mail order. Just phone and we can help you choose the most suitable for your needs, or use this website.
Our trugs are still made using traditional methods and materials. We use locally coppiced sweet chestnut for the frame and the willow for the boards and feet is mainly a by product of the cricket bat industry. Trug making plays a small but important part in the conservation of ancient coppiced woodlands and is one of the reasons trug making needs to be preserved as a craft.
